USE Efficiency May 2011 activities
Monday, 27 June 2011
May was no doubt the month of teacher crossovers and national events.

First on May 11-12th, at IHA. After the welcome speech of the Director of architectural and civil engineering and professor of lighting design and research, Werner Osterhaus, Professor Arne Førland-Larsen spoke about the new project,”Navitas – the living lab”.

Navitas will be Aarhus's new hub for innovation, education and energy. The building will contain facilities for education, research, development and entrepreneurship and the approx. 35,000 m² at Navitas Park will be ready for 2014. The concept of Navitas has the IT City at Katrinebjerg in Aarhus as its model and wishes to create an environment, where education, development and research go hand in hand in strong cooperation with the business community.

Later on a guided tour was organized with industry partners and students attending the USE Efficiency training course or interested. There are two different projects done as test buildings in Aarhus.

Afternoon lectures were delivered by the partners, VGTU and Mälardalen, as part of the teacher cross over with an open discussion afterwards. It was a great success especially for the students to see the approaches and differences, and be able to compare this with their own projects.
Next day another guided tour took place; this time to the Engineering Campus. The participants visited different laboratories and listened to a presentation of the equipment used in the training course and the equipment available at IHA. They also visited the windmill on top of the roof which is mostly used for testing.

Last presentation was delivered by Professor Werner Osterhaus on the lighting lab at IHA. The laboratory was under construction but the presentation was about the ideas for the new lab.

17-18 May HCU hosted Maria Kolokotroni and Peter Warren from Brunel University, London, Jens Knissel from IWU, Darmstadt and Derek Kearney from DIT, Dublin.
On the first day the students of the USE Efficiency training course were presenting their state of work in the project. Six groups of students (about 3 students per group) first presented their analysis of the existing situation. That was followed by students presentations of design ideas for this building. The HCU is moving into a new building in the Hafen City in 2 years. They had to show proposals for a new usage of the existing buildings and think about energy efficiency factors. The students performed very well and the presentation and following discussions were a great success.
May 18 was the day of the national event, with about 30 guests. Students and experts were invited to the lectures of the partners. HCU has a study program called REAP (Resource Efficiency in Architecture and Planning). All first year students took part in the event. The partner’s lectures had presentations on Post occupancy evaluation of buildings for optimal energy and environmental performance, Energy-Efficient Ventilation, Generating customized benchmarks for operational rating and on Wind Energy.

During May 2011, UPVLC had the first USE EFF national event where project actual results were presented together with several presentations from industry energy experts and an European project leader from the University of Coimbra.
National event took place in Valencia, on May 26th with 50 participants in the audience, 10 professional speakers and an online audience through Facebook and twitter.  USE Efficiency Spanish event was broadcasted in real time throughout Facebook and twitter. In addition, USE Efficiency was promoted at the different bus lines circulating around Valencia.
